Every Leafs fan alive under 59 has never seen a parade. This clock stops the night they lift it. Until then, we count.
We add up the NHL salary cap ceiling for every season since 2005-06 and assume the Leafs spent right up to it each year. The lockout-shortened 2012-13 season is prorated to 48 games. This season's $104 million cap is added by the second across the regular season, Sept. 29, 2026 to April 10, 2027, the same way NHL salaries are paid out. The meter rests in the offseason.
The cap-era number doesn't count bonuses, buyouts or spending over the cap with injured players.
The 1967 estimate. NHL salaries weren't made public until about 1990, so no Leafs payroll exists for most of 1967 to 2004. We estimate each of those seasons as the league-average salary times a 25-man roster: the NHLPA's reported averages for 1990-91 to 1998-99, and in between the reported markers of about $25,000 before 1972, roughly triple that a few years into the WHA era, about $232,000 in 1989 and about $1.8 million by 2003. Before the mid-1990s those averages mix Canadian and US dollars.
Then every season since 1967, cap era included, is converted to today's dollars with the US Consumer Price Index (September 2026), so a 1970 dollar counts as about eight of today's. The Leafs usually spent more than the league average, so this estimate is probably low.
